Maori Television

Bringing te reo Maori content to all Kiwis on all devices.

The inspiration

The internet is a great leveler and we wanted to not only give Maori Television a world class website admired by other indigenous broadcasters, but to be world class - period.

It had to be simple, contemporary, great to use on mobile and extend Maori Televisions' reach in revitalising a language and culture that is the birthright of every Maori and the heritage of every New Zealander.

The painting

It's not every day that a new website results in a large contemporary painting hung in the clients foyer.

The look and feel of the website had to say "Kiwi" more than anything else and reflect a core set of principles that brings together a country in celebration of Maori language and culture. What better way than involving a contemporary artist to bring the principles alive and form the basis of the visual language on the website.

We worked with Shane Hansen to develop a digital illustration and large contemporary painting reflecting Maori Television's core vision of "Mā rātou, mā mātou, mā koutou, mā tātou. For them, for us, for you, for all of us."

This is a website that embraces everything Maori Television does and as we head towards our 9th anniversary, it marks a significant development. We are fast becoming a digital multi-media organisation - this is not a standard refresh, it’s a complete overhaul.

Responsive design

Along with an inviting design we wanted all Kiwi's regardless of digital device to be able to access over 1000 episodes of catchup video and a revitalised news section. We used the latest responsive design techniques to reflow each page to fit any screen size and we're now seeing double the usage on smartphones.
